Playgrounds are important for keeping children active and healthy, but they can also be dangerous if children are not properly supervised. A well-designed playground can prevent many injuries, such as cuts and sprains, by ensuring equipment is in good condition and that kids have adult supervision while using it.

When buying a playground, make sure you check that the product meets safety standards and has a manufacturer's warranty. You can find a list of these at the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) website.

The IPEMA Logo identifies equipment that has been independently tested to confirm that it meets the relevant playground safety requirements. These tests include ASTM F1487 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use, CAN/CSA Z614, Children's Playspaces and Equipment, and other standards.

They should also check that the playground has a suitably high fall height to reduce the likelihood of falls. This should be a minimum of 3.5 inches above the top of protective playground surfacing.

Similarly, a playground should have an exit region at the bottom of slides, designed to allow kids to safely escape from the play structure and prevent cuts or entanglement in the slide. This should have rounded edges to prevent a child's clothing or other body part from getting caught and cutting their hands.
